Surah al-Mulk: virtue, meaning and reciting it before sleep

Surah al-Mulk is thirty verses long — a few minutes of recitation that the Prophet ﷺ tied to the night.

What is the virtue of Surah al-Mulk?

It is reported that there is a surah of thirty verses that interceded for a man until he was forgiven: *Tabarakalladhi biyadihil-mulk*. It is also reported that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he recited Surah as-Sajdah and Surah al-Mulk.

What is Surah al-Mulk about?

It opens by declaring that all dominion is in Allah''s hand, and that life and death were created to test which of us is best in deed. It invites the reader to look up at a sky without flaw, to walk the earth that was made subservient, and to notice the birds held aloft. It warns of a fire whose keepers ask its people whether no warner came to them, and it closes with a question no one can escape: if your water were to sink into the earth, who could bring you flowing water?

Why recite it at night?

The night is when the false sense of control loosens. A surah about dominion belonging to Allah alone lands differently in the hour before sleep — and it prepares the heart for standing later in the night.

How long does it take?

Most people recite it in six to eight minutes. Read it from the mushaf if you have not memorised it; there is no requirement to recite from memory.

How can I memorise Surah al-Mulk?

Take two verses a night, recite them in your voluntary prayers the next day, and review the whole from verse one each week. In roughly a month it becomes yours. Pair it with the adhkar before sleep for a complete night routine.
