Tahajjud for beginners
A realistic first month: what to expect, what to aim for, and what not to worry about.
Pending scholarly review · Last updated 9 August 2026
If you have never prayed Tahajjud, here is an honest starting point.
Week one
Choose two nights. Not seven. Set the alarm for twenty minutes before Fajr. Pray two rak'ahs, make dua, and go back to sleep if you need to.
Week two to four
Add a night if it feels sustainable. Keep the length the same. The goal at this stage is not depth — it is showing up.
Things beginners worry about that do not matter
- Whether you memorised a long surah. You did not need to.
- Whether you cried. Presence is not measured in tears.
- Whether you missed last night. Tonight is its own night.
The one thing that does matter
Consistency. "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if they are few." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464; Sahih Muslim 783)
