Tahajjud for women: common questions

Menstruation, praying at home, children who wake, safety — the questions women actually ask about the night prayer.

References checked against Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim and Sunan Abi Dawud · Last updated 12 August 2026

The night prayer is not a men's worship. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) is the primary narrator of how the Prophet ﷺ prayed at night, because she watched him do it. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147)

During menstruation

Ritual prayer is not performed during menstruation, and there is no making it up. But the night is not closed. Dhikr, dua, listening to the Qur'an, seeking forgiveness and giving charity all remain, and the last third remains the hour of answering. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145)

Many women describe these nights as the ones where they learned to ask, rather than to perform.

Praying at home

There is no requirement to go anywhere. The Prophet ﷺ prayed his night prayer at home. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1129) A prayer mat beside the bed is enough.

When you have young children

Some nights it is two short rak'ahs while a child sleeps on you. The Prophet ﷺ said the most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464) Three minutes counts.

Waking your household

He ﷺ said: "May Allah have mercy on a man who rises in the night and prays, and wakes his wife; and if she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. And may Allah have mercy on a woman who rises in the night and prays, and wakes her husband." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1308 — graded authentic)
