Tahajjud during Ramadan
How Tahajjud, Taraweeh and Qiyam relate during Ramadan, and how to use the last ten nights.
Pending scholarly review · Last updated 9 August 2026
In Ramadan the night prayer takes on a communal shape.
Taraweeh and Tahajjud
Taraweeh is the night prayer of Ramadan prayed in congregation after Isha. It is the same category of prayer as Tahajjud — night prayer — offered at a different point in the night. Praying Taraweeh does not prevent praying again later in the night.
The virtue
"Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins are forgiven." (Sahih al-Bukhari 37; Sahih Muslim 759)
The last ten nights
ʿA''ishah said that when the last ten nights entered, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his waist-wrapper, spend the night in worship, and wake his family. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2024)
If you build a small habit before Ramadan, the last ten nights will not feel like a foreign country.
