Morning and evening adhkar: the daily fortress

What to say after Fajr and after Asr — Ayatul Kursi, the three quls, Sayyid al-Istighfar and more, with the narrations they come from.

Adhkar are short remembrances that fit into an ordinary day and quietly change it. Allah says that hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah.

When are the morning and evening adhkar said?

The morning portion is said between Fajr and sunrise; the evening portion between Asr and Maghrib. If you miss the window, say them when you remember — the reward of a missed habit restarted is better than a habit abandoned.

Ayatul Kursi

Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi (Surah al-Baqarah 2:255) in the morning is protected until evening, and whoever recites it in the evening is protected until morning, as reported in the narrations on its virtue. It is also recited after every obligatory prayer and before sleep.

The three quls

Recite Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas three times each, morning and evening. The Prophet ﷺ told a companion that these three suffice him against everything.

Sayyid al-Istighfar — the master of seeking forgiveness

"O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant..." The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says it during the day with certainty and dies that day enters Paradise, and likewise at night.

Words that are light on the tongue

  • *Subhan Allahi wa bihamdih* — one hundred times a day; sins are erased though they be like the foam of the sea.
  • *La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa Huwa ''ala kulli shay''in Qadir* — one hundred times a day carries the reward of freeing ten slaves.
  • *Subhan Allahi wa bihamdih, subhan Allahil-''Azim* — two words beloved to the Most Merciful, light on the tongue, heavy on the scale.

Protection before travel, food and sleep

Say *Bismillahilladhi la yadurru ma''asmihi shay''un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'', wa Huwas-Sami''ul-''Alim* three times morning and evening. Before sleep, gather the hands, recite the three quls, blow into them and wipe over the body, and recite Ayatul Kursi.

How do I keep this consistent?

Attach the adhkar to something you already do: stay on the prayer mat after Fajr for five minutes, and say the evening portion on your commute home. Small and daily beats long and occasional — the most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if few.
