Duas for forgiveness: how to ask and be answered

Istighfar in the Qur'an and Sunnah — the words to say, how often the Prophet ﷺ said them, and why the pre-dawn hour is named for those who seek forgiveness.

No sin is too large for a Lord who calls Himself al-Ghaffar. What is asked of you is to turn back.

How often should I seek forgiveness?

The Prophet ﷺ, whose past and future faults were forgiven, said that he sought Allah''s forgiveness and turned to Him more than seventy times a day. Istighfar is not only for the guilty; it is the posture of a servant before his Lord.

Sayyid al-Istighfar

The master of seeking forgiveness begins: *Allahumma Anta Rabbi la ilaha illa Anta, khalaqtani wa ana ''abduk, wa ana ''ala ''ahdika wa wa''dika mastata''t...* — "O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I keep Your covenant and promise as much as I can..." Whoever says it in the day with certainty and dies before evening is among the people of Paradise.

The dua of Adam

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us we will surely be among the losers." (al-A''raf 7:23) These are the words Adam was given after his slip, and they remain the template for every child of Adam.

Why the pre-dawn hour?

Allah praises those who seek forgiveness in the hours before dawn — *wa bil-ashari hum yastaghfirun* (adh-Dhariyat 51:18). The night prayer and istighfar were placed together deliberately: stand, pray what you can, then sit and ask.

What is real tawbah?

Sincere repentance means stopping the sin, regretting it, resolving not to return, and restoring rights to anyone you wronged. Words without leaving the act are, as the scholars said, the repentance of liars.

What if I keep falling back into the same sin?

Keep returning. A hadith qudsi records that as long as a servant sins and then seeks forgiveness, Allah keeps forgiving him. Despair is a bigger danger than the sin itself. Change the environment that makes the sin easy, add one good habit in its place, and ask at the times dua is answered.

Istighfar and your worldly life

Nuh told his people to seek their Lord''s forgiveness, promising rain in abundance, wealth, children and gardens (Nuh 71:10–12). Istighfar is tied in the Qur''an not only to the hereafter but to relief in this life.
