"To Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them." (Qur'an 7:180)
What does the hadith about ninety-nine names say?
"Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever encompasses them will enter Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736, Sahih Muslim 2677)
The hadith does not say the names of Allah are limited to ninety-nine — it says that among His names are ninety-nine with this reward. The widely circulated list of exactly ninety-nine comes through a narration in Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3507 whose enumeration hadith scholars — including Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari, commenting on Sahih al-Bukhari 2736 — consider the work of a narrator rather than the words of the Prophet ﷺ himself.
What does "encompass them" mean?
Scholars explain it as three things together: memorising them, understanding their meanings, and acting on what they require. Knowing that Allah is *ar-Raqib* (the Watchful) should change what you do when no one is watching.
How do I use the names in dua?
Match the name to the need. Ask *ar-Razzaq* for provision, *ash-Shafi* for healing, *al-Ghafur* for forgiveness, *al-Fattah* for a way out. Beginning a dua with praise using His names, then salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ, then the request, is the order taught in the Sunnah. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3476)
Which names appear most in the Qur'an?
*Ar-Rahman* and *ar-Rahim* — the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful — open all but one surah. The Qur'an leads with mercy, and so should the way you think about Him.
What is the greatest name?
The Prophet ﷺ heard a man say: "O Allah, I ask You by the fact that to You belongs all praise, there is no deity but You, the Bestower, Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer" — and said: "He has asked Allah by His greatest name, by which when He is asked He gives, and when He is called upon He answers." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1495)
Calling on Him by that name in the last third of the night, when He Himself invites the asking, is where the two teachings meet.
