Adhkar after every salah: what to say and how many

The remembrances the Prophet ﷺ said after each obligatory prayer, in order, with their counts and references.

The moments after the tasleem are among the most under-used in a Muslim's day. The Prophet ﷺ filled them with a short, fixed sequence.

The order of the adhkar

  1. Istighfar three times, then: *Allahumma antas-Salam wa minkas-salam, tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram.* (Sahih Muslim 591)
  2. *La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir.* (Sahih al-Bukhari 844)
  3. Subhanallah 33, Alhamdulillah 33, Allahu akbar 33, completing the hundred with *la ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir.* "His sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea." (Sahih Muslim 597)
  4. Ayatul Kursi. (an-Nasa'i, al-Sunan al-Kubra 9848)
  5. Al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas — once after each prayer, three times after Fajr and Maghrib. (Sunan Abi Dawud 1523)

Is there a dua the Prophet ﷺ told a companion never to leave?

Yes. He said to Mu'adh: "I love you — so never leave saying at the end of every prayer: *Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik*." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1522)

How long does this take?

Around three minutes. Five times a day it becomes the backbone of your dhikr and it costs nothing extra — you are already sitting there.

Does this replace night prayer?

No. These are the adhkar of the fard prayers. The night prayer is separate and remains the best voluntary prayer after the obligatory ones. (Sahih Muslim 1163)
